Is it worth it? Yes and no... Really, just as in the audio game, there are a number of things at work here (reputation, scarcity, and quality) Any of these things can bring up the price of a wine. It is also a matter of pallete. I have tried old Bordeaux that, while I appreciate the wondeful complexity and longevity, didn't do for me what the 85 Beaucastel CDP or 81 Vega Sicilia 'Unico' did. These wines, while being expensive, are not as severe as the Bordeaux. I agree wholeheartedly with Lee's remarks on the D'Yquem. It will honestly shatted your ideas of what sweet wine should be. Also, as a Sommelier, my official stance on corkage is buy expensive Bordeaux from me. Unofficially, if you have it, bring it in and let me taste it. On most bottles of any worth, I will waive corkage. I guess the best advice is to stick to a wine you know you like and go for an back vintage for that first foray into 'megabuck' wine. Drink it while listening to your favorite recording on the other thing we all probably spent too much money on.
