...and then explore similar wines. If you're overwhelmed by the sheer volume of stuff out there then keeping the scope narrow helps one to focus. When I was just starting out I would explore Rhônes for a while, California zins for a while, Gris du Toul for a while, etc., etc. Eventually you start getting the bigger picture by fitting the individual pieces of your own tastes into a coherent whole, but that's too much to expect to do right off the bat.

And have fun--there's a lot of great stuff out there to be discovered.
