My father has an old Leica III with a bad curtain shutter (actually, he's got 2 bodies, both in similar condition). Is there a good, reliable place out there to get this fixed?Or, is it too old/antiquated/expensive to bother with?
He tried to get one fixed back in the early '90's, but the local shop sent it someplace that just couldn't get it done right.

Try Don Goldberg - DAG Camera Repair. Don did an excellent job servicing both my Leica III and IIIf about five years ago. Don has an excellent reputation with Leica users.DAG Camera Repair

gives them an excuse for a road trip, not that they have ever needed one since my dad retired...
Check out out Essex Camera in NJ. They did a great job cleaning my '52 Rolleicord III and Zeiss Super Ikonta A. Now they are very smooth and work perfectly. The price is pretty good and the turn around time was 2 weeks for me from the time of my aproval/payment. By the way they are recomded by the Leica Historical Society of America.Anyway, since those cameras belong to your father and they are Leica. I think they wroth fixing consider the story and the centimental they represent. They are pretty tough cameras I would guess the oil is all dried up and need a good cleaning. As long as all the parts are intact and no broken parts they should last you another 50 years or so. Just past them on to your children.

Yes, definitely explore getting it fixed. The III is not as reliable as the later "monochassis" models (from the IIIc on), but is a wonderful machine. As to a repairer, the best I've found is Ken Ruth at Bald Mountain Photography (www.baldmtn.com, 813-423-4465). He overhauled my Leica IIIf a while back and did an excellent job. He sometimes gets a little backed up, so be patient.
thanks. I'll give him a call.not sure, these may well be IIIc or IIIf bodies, can't recall (my father has them), tho I know they're III of some sort.
