My iPod will NOT download songs off my iMac

I know next to nothing about computers, but I have downloaded the iPod program, the computer has iTunes on it already, but iTunes will not ad iPod to its selection menu, and the computer will not recognize that the iPod is connected to it to allow updates.
The iPod icon does appear on the main page and can be opend, it just won't link. Accoridng to the instructions, this should be automatic. I've reset the iPod, to know avail.
Any thoughts?
P.S. I'm having all kinds of problems with the curser jumping all over the place, and am wondering if my computer has bad firewire software, or a mechanical defect there. Also, could insufficient voltage from an overburdened circuit cause these problems?
