Wireless LAN range?

What is the range and signal drop-off for a wireless LAN?
I use a USR wireless router on my server and main computer (wired) and a run another PC downstairs which I use to record my LPs onto and transmit to the fileserver upstairs. Distance is about 40 feet.
I had a flood in my basement (good thing the stereo is wall mounted) and the floor got wet so I had to move the PC to another room. It is farther away by about 50 feet. I noticed the signal strength went from 75% to about 15% and thought the PC can recognize the network, it does not see the other computers and fileserver. I think the WEP encryption still works it made not difference if I turned it off.
