The reviews have beeen good and Im thinking of buying one. Should I consider the Canon Rebel XT or Nikin 70 instead?

I'll be using it for general picture taking as well as making photography a nice hobby since Im getting bored with audio :^)

Canon or Nikon should be your only choices if you're at all serious about the craft of Photography, AVOID ALL OTHERS., posted on June 19, 2005 at 19:18:58

The photo world Lives & breathes by those two. Even I a 30 year user of Nikon, am contemplating getting a second system made by Canon. Since no one Digital camera these days can compete for important photo assignments. I would be able to get the best of both worlds. Nikon 70D and Canon 20D wow the possibilities.

Landscapes? Candids? Portraits? Studio work? High res paper prints? Web res electronic pics? Some combination of these?

The choice really depends upon on your desires and your previous experience. Do you want to pursue photography for the love of the art, or are you a gearhead? Are you willing to go through a few different cameras to get to the one that floats your boat, or do you need a single solution? Have you used a digital camera before, or will this be your first one? Do you have a big investment in 35mm film gear that might be usable with the same mfgr's digital gear?

The Canons and the Nikons are very nice, though I would make a different choice than Joe and get a used copy of a more rugged professional body like a D1X for what I would spend on a D70 *and* a 20D.

The other DSLRs have good reputations too. The Nikon has the advantage of a bigger range of legacy lenses that fit the current pro bodies, while the Canon can be adapted for use with all sorts of manual lenses including Leica.

You need Doc B to kick some life into your audio.
The audio coming from any little digital camera just isn't going to do it.

I went down to the local dealer to look at the Pentax but unfortunately he was out of stock. He mentioned something about the Pentax using AA batteries as not being a good thing. Anyway, since Im a newbee I asked to see what else he had.
Long story short, I bought a Canon Rebel (Not XT). Seems very well made and a pleasure to handle and less expensive than the PENTAX. I guess I could of waited till he had one in stock but being new at this, Im sure either would have made me happy.
Justifying the purchase of a somewhat expensive camera to the wife was much easier than any audio purchse :^) Took some pictures of my sons graduation yesterday. Downloaded to pics into the computer and made a slideshow of the event and later burned a copy onto a disk and view it on the TV. Printed a few pics right off the printer. Amazing :^)

I guess now I should be considering upgrading the lens? :^)

Agreed. Perhaps meant to flame. Certainly outside the realm of truth.

I have used Pentax all my life, and I'd put their products up against anyone's.

'Course, I do landscapes, and therefore digitals are basically useless to me. Plus, neither Canon nor Nikon makes a medium format, so they're not even in the game.
