Laptop Widescreen vs. "old standard"

I plan to continue searching, but this is the first place I'm asking. We just got a new laptop with widescreen (I think 16 - 9 ratio or something like that) similar to widescreen TV format. The problem I see is all graphics including websites or photos on CD are formatted for the traditional measurement 15" screen. With the widescreen - all the graphics are wider than they should be. In other words out of proportion for the "new" widescreen. Perhaps there's a Window XP setting to correct the proportions? If anyone knows of it OR a software program that's XP Pro compatible to correct the proportions, please let me know. Thanks.
