are the AMD sempron processors competitive with pentium 4 (2.2, 2.4) processors in terms of their actual in use processing speed when surfing the net and surfing ebay ( going from page to page )? thanks

Athlons and Athlon 64 are more comparable to P4 AMD chips process more instructions per clock cycle so a lesser Mhz AMD is equal to a higher Mhz Pentium.
As far as surfing the web and ebay goes, it's fine. Make sure you have enough RAM and decent video card or enough RAM for shared video and system.
