I need to pick some brains. SCSI vs IDE... any thoughts, comments, naysayers.....

 It really depends on what you want to accomplish. SCSI ("scuzzy") is fast, very fast. It is also very expensive relative to the amount of gigabytes vs newer IDE drives. In most cases you'll need a separate controller (if your motherboard doesn't already have one). I guess if you're building a server accessed by many then a SCSI may be benificial (or if you have money to burn for a personal setup). I'd suggest you compare specs of the Western Digital SATA 'Raptor' drives and see if they might meet your needs. The Raptors spin at 10,000 RPM and use a Serial ATA interface. They also cost a little less then comparable SCSI drives. Many newer motherboards already come with SATA controllers. Good luck.

I already have an Intel (TIGER) dual processor (older pentium pro) MOBO with an ADAPTEC wide SCSI onboard controller I traded for. Really didn't cost me anything out of pocket. I am still in learning mode. Can I mix IDE and SCSI or can I just add ATAPI devices (in addition to the 14 SCSI devices). I have 2 4.3 G SCSI HDD's and an ATAPI burner (old HP 7100) Can I set the boot device or must I let the machine choose?. I haven't been able to find out much online , maybe I just don't know where to look?

You can mix IDE & SCSI in the same machine (not RAID – and it may require a separate controller)

Depends on your device; Some ATAPI devices will accept SCSI command packets (SCSI emulation)

Depending on your setup you may be able to set which drive is the boot drive (usually drive 0)
