...at our wine group XMas Dinner in a couple of weeks we will be blind tasting chardonnay with our wives.

I think the 2015 Steele chardonnay will be the one to beat.

Any recommendations?

...my wife, who is the chardonnay drinker, and I have done a couple of blind tastings ourselves with some of her favorites, a few costing about $30.

In each one of those tastings, the $10 2015 Kendall-Jackson Vintners Reserve has surprisingly been the winner.

That will be what we are bringing next week so we'll see how it does.

Does it have to be domestic?

Can't you throw in a couple of ringers?

On the cheap side, how about Kim Crawford unoaked? Wide availability.

But for true comparison, how about a Meursault (about the same price as Rombaurer), or even a Pouilly-Fuisse.

Some minerality and acidity.

Are you going to have them with food or just drinking?

Mineral and acidity won't win - fruit and buttery smoothness will.

...all of the entries in the tasting will be from CA since that's what most of our wives drink.

Past winners were Rombauer, Butter and MacRostie.
