scored a BUNCH of books while preparing a house for sale and helping friend pack up as well.

a bound copy of 'Jude the Obscure' By Thomas Hardy.

Vikram Seth's 'An Equal Music' - highly recommended for insight into chamber music and musician's.

Drusilla Modjeska's 'the pear orchard' - anticipating this

Ondaatje's "the English patient"- ditto.

And ..... "Enemy at the Gates" about Stalingrad.

The English Patient, posted on September 18, 2004 at 04:48:25
I larfed when i saw The English Patient at the top of the best seller list when the movie was popular. I had images of all these horny housewives who fancied Feinnes struggling with the often turgid prose of the book. I read it when it won the Booker and quite enjoyed it but it was sloooow and difficult in parts. I reckon most of the readers would have given up after 2 chapters.

I adore Jude The Obscure, my mother in law abhors it with a passion which makes me like it even more. A stunning book. One for the desert island along with the mogadon and the noose.

Vikram Seth? Enjoyed that bloody huge thing he did who's name escapes me. Someones wedding? A bride for Mr Biswas? No, getting very confused here. A Chymical Wedding? No... erm.. A Suitable boy. Bingo!

Drusilla Modjeska's 'the pear orchard' ? It rings a bell. Why does it? Aussie book?

Just finished The Gift Of Speed by Steven Carroll. Set in Melbourne during the 1960,61 cricket tour by the West Indies. Nice book, very nice. A good one for a nice warm day and a cold beer or two once the pollie nonsense is over.

Paul
