Practical value...yes. The people responsible for the Charles Shaw label(Big Bronco) store around 70 million gallons at it's main production plant, the stainless tank farm approach allows mass quantities to be processed and stored by only a hanfull of winery workers. Barreling such a volume of wine would require a tremendous work force (unionized at this plant) and the physical storage area would be increased to a size that would be very difficult to properly cool and condition. Bulk wine tanks are cooled by circulating the entire tank through high flow ammonia chillers that can be used for many tanks one after another.
