2007 Brancaia Tre

I tried it because it was #10 in Wine Spectator's "Top 100 Exciting Wines of 2009". They gave it a 93. It's a Sangiovese/Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blend (80/10/10), and I expected it to be a bit fruit-forward. But it has a nice peppery aroma, firm tannins, and is very well balanced. I bought a case for $240 the next week.

2005 Hart & McGarry Cabernet Sauvignon

I was buying some wine and the floor salesman suggested I try this. He said, "this is not a steak wine, it's a hamburger wine. But most people really like it." It was on sale for $12.99, so I thought why not. What a nice surprise! Good aroma of dark fruit and chocolate, firm tannins, nice balance, good finish. I immediately (okay, next day) went back and bought 4 more. If you just want to sit around and have some unpretentious wine while you gab with your friends, this is a nice one.
