as mentioned above, you keep it from getting too warm. where do you live? even if there's no basement, a lot of mild climates can work for storage for a little while, like a yr or so. put it in the most stable temp place you have. and don't forget to lay it down to keep the cork moist. i keep wine in boxes in the crawl space under my house. next to the dirt down there, it's cool, even when the outside temp is 100 degrees.
