To be fair, the glowing reviews I've read were of the 1999 Cabernet, with some also saying the 2000 is "good, but not as good as the 99". Perhaps they're on a downward trend.
Well, having heard all the good reviews of the $2 "2 buck chuck" from trader joe's I picked up a few to try out. Unfortunately, the 2001 Cabernet is rather horrid. It tastes very heavily of tannin, and if I didn't know better I might describe it as almost salty. It also gave me a rather strong headache after a single glass, which while not unprecedented (I'm occasionally sensitive to sulfites) is a bit unusual.
