No doubt they changed the bottle.

The Pavelot white tasted perfectly fine, no weeds, not a hell of a lot of acidity either, let alone too much.

Maybe the sandwich would have helped.

The Jouards were very professional. I agree they lacked any sort of charming quirks. But they were good wines. Unlike the horrifying stuff from Weydangt. Peter seems to have lost his marbles, bringing in this miserable Boileau's fake Chablis plus the other two pitiful whites, then adding insult to injury by taking not only Rebourseau but Clos des Lambrays. Or vice versa. Is he just trying to fill appellations? Picking up on producers he thinks will improve in the near future who have great vineyards but who still stink, to beat the rush? If so, it's a risky gamble.

I've liked some of Cordier's stuff in the past. These all tasted pristine but industrial and characterless. The Bourgogne Blanc tasted like jug wine, and things didn't get a lot better from there.

I agree: the state of the barrel-wood industry is woeful. I do like certain wines made in wood by suppliers other than Dargaud and Blanchard, however. Maybe you should start a barrel business as your next sideline venture. It will give you something to do with all your profits from Overnoy, the Picrate, and Robert Denis. Think big. Seize the day! Grab the bull by the balls.... Uh, I think I've gone off track.

The Derain thing could be a lot of things. Well, not too many, actually. But in any case, it's probably a simple question of staying on top of the topping up. Judging by the barrels I've seen. He obviously likes a note of oxidation in his whites, and he's not alone in that. That said, the '95-'97 whites aren't oxidative, and his aligoté is almost antioxidative.

But let's not trade insults over Derain, when we both greatly admire what he does. Even if we like oxidative whites ourselves.

Let's not give ourselves the heebie-jeebuses.

Let's plan our Trump Tower invasion.
