In Reply to: Mr. Vinyl Junkie, are you still here? I finally got my SOTA composite armboard. posted by Mr. Wonderful on August 02, 1999 at 18:49:18:
Mr. wonderful,i am interested in your observations in dealing with the composite armboard...please elaborate.
regards,
floyd a fellow sota owner.
Oh Hi Floyd, I still remember you told me the SOTA phone no. Thanx again.I got the board from Needledoctor though.
The board looks gorgeous and upon installation, add some elegance to my black Star TT. It is much heavier than the original MDF board though so I have to take away some lead shots to get the platter balance. Since it is thicker so I have to use another set of longer screws to mount my SME V arm onto it.
Re.the sound, since I have to readjust everything all over again so there might be some differences due to altered setting. One thing I can tell you is that it sounds much more HiFi than the MDF board. The bass extension goes lower with more resolution and the high also goes higher. Images are more pin-pointed and the soundstage more open. Dynamics is improved too so the sound seems a bit faster. However, there is a trace of 'acrylic sound' similar to what you hear from a VPI or Basis TT making the mid range not as musical as the MDF. It is difficult to explain by words what I meant by 'acrylic sound' but maybe, thick, dense, smooth, stable, overdamped would help to explain.
I have to spend a bit longer to re-tune my system all over again to get the benefit of the improved freq extensions, resolution, dynamics without tightening up the midrange. Overally speaking, it certainly worth the cost especially if your music preference is Jazz, rock or mass orchestral work.
Wonderful, you are welcome for the number. could you email mail me regarding the price range of the board? so i can gauge future expenses...
thanks,
floydl
Terribly sorry to butt in, but I've just bought the entry level
Sota and would appreciate having the manufacturer's number. I've
been searching the web and have, so far, come up empty. Thanks very much,
Antony
