What is wrong when a Gyrodec sounds bright, pushy, forward, agressive, grainy, and almost cd-like??? There is too much rumble also. Wrong VTA? busted cartridge? The thing is my friend's, it sits on a DIY sandbox / heavy triple-column sand loaded dedicated turntable stand. The arm is SME309, and the cartridge is a Grado Reference (thats what he says ... and I cant tell the new wooden body Grados apart). Phono/line stage is Audio Research SP-9, power amp is Plinius SA100 mkIII and speakers are Sonus faber Concerto Grand Piano. Cables are all Cardas Cross. (friend transferred the DIN connector from a VdH phono cable - it is possible that it was not done correctly) He also has a Musical Fidelity Xray cd player and it does not sound bright or pushy when used in the same system so I suspect something is not right in his analog front end.
The wood body Grado are branded on the top of the cartridge's with
the marking's "RP" reference platinum, etc. which means you have to
unmount them to check'em.
GTF
Something is definetely wrong !-)
But why? My experience tells me to
investigate the cartridge/phonostage, including of
course setup of the arm.Tis a strange world, with a Gyro + SME +Grado
sounding harsh.........
Hyperion, the following suggestions may have already been looked after, BUT just in case:1) Make sure turntable is level, at the base and platter.
2) Make sure suspension is moving correctly
3) Make sure motor and belt are working properly and belt is in good condition
4) Check ALL electrical connections from the cartridge back. Are they clean and tight? Was the DIN plug soldered on correctly and is there a proper ground?
5) Is the SRA/VTA set correctly? Assuming that nothing else on the TT is wrong, an incorrect SRA will make things sound hard and bright.
6) Is the preamp working correctly? This is offered as a check list that you may have already done.
