FInaly got some time to take the boat out, and wouldnt you know it, it was windy, and very choppy, borderline whitecaps. Winds wire gusting up to 20MPH.
I pull up to the boat ramp at the unGodly hour of 6 am. 1 boat is in the water, 1 is being launched, and 1 is in front of me waiting. SO,, I get out and prep the boat for launch wile Im waiting, Mount the motor to my Homemade transom extention via 2 C-clamps. Connect up the battery, make sure the plug is in etc.. about this time, I hear the first boat, Poor guy was pulling his arm off trying to start a 20hp nizzan outboard. The Guy launching pulls out, guy in front of me starts to launch, and now I hear the second boat trying to start, a 90 hp susuki cranking over without a sputter. The first 2 boat owners ,, now tied to the dock aparently start trying to give each other advice on how to start there boat. Third boat gets launched, Has a small motor, like a 6 maybe,, couldnt make out what it was, but it was old. Anyway, this boat starts drifting out away fromt the dock all the wile its owner trying to pull it over with no luck..
Finally, My turn to Launch. I back up get in the water and pull away to park my truck. Come back, In the Boat, Take a look at the 3 non functioning boats tied to the dock and wonder if Im the forth. I hit the electric, and my old Johnson fired right up. With a slight grin on my face I wave to the other owners and head out. Good Old Johnson... So here I am barreling accrost the lake in about 1 foot waves that are fairly close together thinking to myself. Well, the bow is sitting a bit high in the air, But Im impressed with the forward velocety, Bout this time it Dies BBBBBRRrrrrrr....fhpt..nothing.. took me close to 5 minutes to relize I had pulled the pin on the saftey switch. ( they are in a bad place on this motor, right at the end of the tiller handle ) Put the pin in and was off again. I didnt catch a thing all day, But I did get to finaly run the motor and answere that infomuse question, Just how fast will that go anyway?>
My Home made transom extention held like Iron, didnt move a milimeter or seem to flex at all and the conditions today were about as bad as I would venture out into unless I had too for some reason. The repair I did on the transom corners also held Like Iron. I think I have to take my carb apart 1 more time thought, It still will not idle, and does not like to run below about 10 %throttle. It almost runs slow enough to troll,, almost... but over 10% throttle, It kicks pretty good. Looks to me like I will either have to add trim tabs to the back or about 150 pounds of ballast in the bow. I might try toeing the shaft in a little more to make it force the bow down a little. I was mounted straight up and down, and when I hit it, I couldnt see where I was going from the bow being up so high hehehehe.. accelorating slowely helped keep the bow a little lower, but it is still unaceptable as it is right now. But I feel better. Ive been out on my boat, and was not let down on the speed thing.
After a several hours we pack it in, get some lunch and drive back by the lake again, SOne of a bitch I thought as I drove by. The wind had died almost completely and the water was now almost ( almost ) glass.. Figures,, Ow well, I still had a good time.
Short story,, It works now, Idles pretty dam good in my opinion. ;)
After Running the motor the other day, I new the carb was still messed up, But had to be pretty close becuse it was running pretty good at above idle speeds. It just wouldnt idle at a low enough speed to concider it idling. So once again, Off comes the carb. The first time I took it apart I was mainly going after the float problem, I cleaned it all quickly, but after finding the float stuck, I mainly freed that and put it back together. after that, It started, and ran with the choke out, but would not idle, and didnt like to run at low speed without the choke. Well, today it came apart again, Got soaked in cleaner, and a small wire sent up al the orifaces. There was 1 teeny tiney port type thing with small rubber hose conecting to another tiney port. It conected to the plastic thingy ( pardon the tecnical terms ) inside the opening in the float. anyway, it was clogged, I reamed it, sprayed it with cleaner and put it all back together. slaped the motor over to my test barrel and fired it up. Once again, it fired right up as I expected it too. However,, This time. It actualy idled. I messed with the low idle setting and the actual idle adjustment a little and it is purring almost ( almost ) like a kitten, and certainly within acceptable parameters. After several minutes of warm up, I put it in gear and let it chug at idle wile turning over the prop and it sounded good. I cant wait to get it back out on the lake for a formal run, But I am now convinced I have cured it of its ails..
All said and told,, this motor cost me almost nothing and I am a very happy camper now. Only had to spend 20 bucks between the plugs and the new impellor. Far cry from the 200 bucks the shop quoted to replace the pump and rebuild the Carb.
I concider myself very mecanical, If I take it apart I can rebuild it, I love making things do what I want as opposed to what they are designed for, But when It comes to tuning carbs and such, I new nothing. With nothing but a service manule ( that wasnt much help ) And several people online, I took a motor that has sat for years, and have it running in a acceptable fashion. Thank you to all who have piped in, especialy "Tailgunner". And to anyone else with problems I say this,, ask online and fix it yourself. I saved 180 bucks. You can too..

Nice photos, glad u got the idle problem fixed. I bought a new carb for my craftsman lawnmower, but before it arrived i got a tip and unscrewed this one screw in the carb, reamed it and it started and ran awesome after that. I like that transome you put in, much better than messing with the motor length, this way you have the best of both worlds if you need the motor for a different boat.
Question for you, after a day of using my boat putting around the harbor, I was washing it down then hooked up the clamps on the lower end so that I could flush it out with fresh water. When I started the motor, I expected to see a stream of water come out near the upper unit like it does when it is on the water, none came out. Did the water pump impeller go out on me? Or do these motors have a thermostate that waits for the motor to warm up before pumping? It bothers me and I cant take it out again until I find out for sure. I dont dare work on this motor myself at least at this stage. Some photos below
Hmm, Well,, Even though I managed to rejuvinate my old johnson, replace the water pump, rebuild/tune the carb by myself. ( with much advice ). I do not concider myself a outboard mechanic ( yet ) However. I still might be able to help you troubleshoot it.
first, some questions..
Are you sure you put the mufflers on corectly? and did you have the hose on full or near full?
Did any water move through your motor? IE. was water comming out of the lower end? Or was it just spraying out from the Muffs?
Was this the first time you ran it on Muffs?
My motor also did not show water at the tatle tale wile I had it on my muffs. it barely shows water wile in the tank. I had to test the flow a few differetn ways before I decided my motor was cooling, just not flowing at the tatle tale. If I am not mistaken, your water return ports should be just above the cavitation plate. Throw it in a bucket and fill it up to level with the cavitation plate, leaving the exit port just above water line. Start your motor and check for return waterflow down there. You might also want to check the tatle tale hole for blockage by sending a small diameter wire up the hole.
If your motor fails to pass water after these little tests. I would then say your impellor has died. I have never taken a suzuki apart, but its still a outboard, I would imagin that changing the water pump is pretty much the same on most motors. And I would certainly encurage you to remove the lower end yourself and replace it.
I was very nervouse about taking my lower end off to do the water pump on my motor, However, after doing it, THere was nothng to it. My fears of the Unknown were in this case, Unreasonable.
If your waterpump is more then 2 years old, or if the motor sat dry for a long time, there is a fairly good chance the impellor has died.
Again, Im not familure with suzuki's. But, 6 bolts should release the lower end, leaving it connected by the shift linkage. a big screw driver should relase that and allow the lower end to come off. 4 more bolts on the water pump housing, and then that should come off. Slap a new impellor on and reverse procedure to get it back together. Put a little grease on the top end of the drive shaft before reasembly. When reasembling, reconecting the shift linkage was the most difficult. I had to put the lower part in reverse, and the upper shift handle in forward in order to reconect. Once it was back in possition, the gears realigned themselves. I also had to spin the flywheel a little in order to get the shaft up in its spot. And it did require a bit of gental force to get it all together.
I hope your problem is simple, But if it isnt,, DOnt frett, just grab a wrench and take your time. A extra set of hands is helpful but not required for reassembly, removal by yourself should be no problem.
As expected, my old Johnson preformed well this time out. Started well, idled wile tied to the doc without my constant attention wile I parked the truck, and with the addition of a 5 gallon container of water on my bow, She took off and plained at less then half throttle. ( First time this boat ever plained for me ) Its terribly hard to gauge speed on water without a device, However, I think she tops at about 20 MPH.
I didnt really do any fishing this time out, But I did troll down a 1.5 mile section of shore at idle just to confirm to myself that she would run down smooth and Low for extended periods and at a proper speed.
all told, I spent about a hour at WOT. and about 45 minutes at idle trolling, And another 20 minutes or so of variouse throttle positions. When I got back to shore, I had burned just over a half a gallon of gas. Looks like my little 2 galon tank is gonna be replaced by my 6 gallon tank as soon as I can decide where to put it. My 6hp will drive dam near all day on a half gallon of gas.
I also noticed ( acording to the diognostics on my fish finder ) that the battery was holding 13.5 too 14 volts wile under power,( varience due to throttle position naturaly ) So looks like my alternator is operating as well. One other thing I noticed. Wile trolling, the water out the pee hole was lake temperature, but when I was WOT, the water was warm, not hot, but warm. I guess thats normal and a sign that the water is indeed circulating reguardless of the light spray that comes out the hole

Jeez that is a beautiful area over there (the lake). Looks like the motor is pushing the boat along more than fast enough. Are your trailer lights submersible? I had to change mine out a couple of days ago because they leaked.
I tried putting the motor inside of a a can full of water like you said, and to my huge relief it worked, it started shooting water out the peehole. Whew... but I will keep an eye on it. Not sure what went wrong with the water mufflers, maybe the hose was not turned up enough. I really want to watch the weedeater project that you might take up so keep me posted, of course I am hoping that you make it an outboard instead of a charger. Regarding shipping my motor to you, I would have to find out how much that would be, I am going to let it sit for a bit because I dont want to mess with my boat yet. By the way, how much horsepower does a typical weedeater have?

Yes, That is a very atractive place to go boating, It is around 4 sq miles of lake, and is our public water supply. You cant go swimming or even touch the water, but They will let you drop a outboard in it and runn around dawn til dusk, Go figure.
My trailor lights are submercable, However, 1 is cracked and has been siliconed. I did leave the holes in the bottom there for drainage, The laws of pysics keep them dry. BUT, I do disconect them from the truck prior to launching anyway.
Yours is now the third motor I have ran accrost that does not spray water out the tattle tale when on muffs. I think this is also pysics demonstraighting the path of least resistance. I bet if you restricted water at the lower return port, It would make the tattle tale.
In any event, keep an eye on it, especialy if your impellor is old. Cant change it on the water if it dies so preventitive maintence is the way to go.
Right now, the weed eater is on the shelf awaiting my attention. It has only been ran to verify it works before putting it away. My plate is kinda full with yard work and other spring chores right now. Personly, I am leaning tward the generater prodject, I already have 2 outboards. Being able to make power wile at remote locations is something I could definitly make use of wile camping remote. However, It still might become a outboard for my friends raft. Time will tell,, If I find another weed eater, Ill make both, generater for me, Motor for him. If it does become a motor, there will be almost nothing to it. sharten the shaft, rebend it a little and make a mount for it and mount a prop. should only take a few hours if I go that way. I know it wont be a fast thing, but it shor beats paddling, especialy when your trying to move a raft. Weed eaters are generaly rated in CC not HP, I have no idea how many CC= a HP, But I am guesing me weed eater is between 1/2 and 1 1/2 HP. I know one thing,, weed eaters are HIgh RPM motors, so It should be able to adapt to either prodject.
Where were you repairing on your boat? that hole?? looks like that hole is a self bailer to me..
What is a self baler? We are not really plugging the hole, it was chipped on the bottom so we were fixing that. I noticed that the hole allows water in/out the lower hull-maybe to stablize the boat?
If you do make an outboard using the weedeater, what type of prop would you use, I only found props that spin about 1.5 times less than the engine rpm, yours would be direct drive (1-1 ratio) and like you said the motor would be probably higher rpm that most outboard motors.
I tried the muffs again today after using the boat (photos below), this time I cranked the hose up to full blast and water did come out the peehole, that was a relief. Having an idea about how many things can go wrong with these outboards I will always try to watch it closely. In fact today at 1/3 throttle, just before reaching plane it started to sound different, it went away after reaching plane and slower speeds. Hopefully the sound change was becuase of some type of transition between not on plane and getting on plane what do you think? Had a total blast today on the water, it brought back so many memories when my dad used to take me out on his yacht (33' silverton twin gas 300 hp engines) or his 16 footer/50 hp(we called it "the green boat"). We did not really take this boat on the open ocean, its a bit too small for that. Most boats should be at least 16' I think unless its a boston whaler then maybe a bit smaller. We launched at long beach harbor beacuse there two miles from the coast there is a break water jetty that runs parallel to the coast and is 8 miles long. It keeps the water calm for the cargo ships that come in. The only thing that seemed to go wrong was when I pulled the trailer out of the water, the right trailer light turn signal did not respond, althogh it did respond to the brake light. But I dont mind we had so much fun today. Photos below..
A self bailer is a device that lets water out of the boat without power. Most work on the diafram billows type principal of a 1 way port covered with a gasket letting water onyl travel out. They can work other ways.
As far as the weed eater, Its looking like its gonna be a generater ( sorry but I need a generater ) But, if I were to make the outboard, I would use standart MinKota electric prop. these props have a very slight pitch and should allow the weed eater to get up to full or near full RPM. I dont think the weed eater could turn a standart prop, at least not enough to be practical. Maybe Ill find another weed eater hehehe... There is some sort of clutch and possibly a gear box on this unit, so I am not sure about the 1 ta 1 thing.
as far as the noise you mentioned. You were probably cavitating, But I cant be sure. Scared of the big water huh? well if you dont feel you have enough boat under you by all means stay in safer water. However, dont underestimate your boat, those hard bottomed boats with inflatable bumpers are made for big water. Seen allot of boats like that Associated with the military, and I would say you have enough HP to cover the power base. Yeah I agree.There are allot that can go wrong with Outboards, or anything for that matter. I strongly encourage you to get to know that motor well, pack extra plugs and a few tools . I carry a can of starting fluid with me just in case, Its a terrible thing to do to a 2 cycle, but when stranded someplace, I would use it. ( fortunetly I never had to yet, but I still carry it )However, properly maintained and looked after you shouldnt have too many problems. Both my motors are old so I worry about them a little, but only a little. having the electric on my boat as a backup helps not worry about it too much.
the trailor light thing is probably a ground issue, Trailor lights are finiky sometimes. Could also be a bad bulb.
Its good to hear you are enjoying your boat ;). I have been out in mine several times lately. Oww, I was checking over my motor today, Under the hood looking for preventitive maintence things, chafing wires ect, and when I checked the throttle linkage I noticed something.. I noticed that it wasnt opening the throttle completely when twisted up too full throttle. I bet you I gained about 10% more movement after adjusting. GOing out tommorrow to see the difference. I was thinking the motor wasnt turning max RPM but without a Tack, I could only speculate. And I thought it was fast before hehehe. Cant wait to see it now that its gonna be getting 100% throttle at the carb. Im thinking of putting it in the river tommorrow, miles of mostly calm water and several like side marshes & stuff
