In Reply to: My interesting(?) JBL horn/scoop system sounds good with SET 45 tube amps posted by BrianW on May 12, 2000 at 21:12:05:
Bryan,Not boring at all . . . I have virtually the exact same system as you and find it the best thing I've ever heard!! Using "scoop bass' horn (4530 or C43) laying on their sides (like huge Paragon) with D130 (early '50s solder tab pair) LE175 with acoustic lens and 077 slot lens tweeters w/ x'ver @ 1,500 and 7KHz. Amp is EleKIT TU-872 mod'ed to 45 triodes w/ no NFB and putting out 1.2~1.4W/Ch at best. Sound is ultra-refined, yet powerful dynamically unlike I thought it would be. The efficiency is about 102dB+, so that's what enables it to 'sing'. Your right in the sense that the bass doesn't go al that low (45Hz is what I've measured) but it couples to the room fantastically giving you that vast open well-defined, yet rich upper bass and lower midrange that I personally crave. Lots of happy listening!
