put the lower unit in gear and turn propeller while trying to insert shaft making sure that water pump tube is also lined up.by turning the prop it will eventually let the splines line up on shaft and motor shaft receiver.do not force .the lower unit should slide easily into the shaft up to a point of about a 1/4 inch . then you can take a block of wood and a hammer and tap gently.this should finish letting the shaft enter the receiver.
