Weekend in Turin - recommendations for local wine?

Posted by Peter Earnshaw on October 19, 2004 at 22:32:40:

In two week's time I'll be making a trip to Turin for a long weekend away. There'll be some opportunities for wine to be drunk whilst there, and also for me to secrete a couple of bottles in my hand luggage for later consumption at home, or for laying down.

Am aware that this is Barolo country.... but not all Barolos are created equal !

I'd appreciate recommendations for

1. Wines to be drunk in situ and/or bought and brought back home
2. Good, honest, local wine shops that will sell me good stuff rather than less good stuff that happens to have a dusty label! I'm unlikely to be leaving the city at any point during the stay so it's just city-based shops I'm afraid.
3. What're considered the best seasons for the region - think 1999 is a good candidate, any other years worth making a bee-line for?

Many thanks for contributions.
