Jeff, I've got no experience with any of the wines that you mention, but have a few for you to try. The first is Lemberger (look for Covey Run) I can usually find it for 5.99 a bottle. I think of it as kind of tough and unrefined, but it's a good bottle for takeout pizza. I heard that they aren't going to make it any more (tough sell with that name) so if you like it, pick up a bunch. Also a little up the price bracket is Sagelands Merlot at around 10.99. They are owned by a larger company and have access to some decent vineyards around here. A lot of fruit on the front...a good wine for just drinking...maybe a little too much fruit for some foods.
At the price points your searching at, I don't know that you'll ever find a truly excellent bottle of wine, there are just too many comprimes that need to be made, but it sure is a lot of fun. To give you an idea, last night I was running numbers on wine that I hope to make next year. I'll make around 500 cases tops and my COST per bottle is around 15.50 per bottle! If I price that wine at 30.00 (which I can't, because it's a dead price point right now), I have to sell it to distributors for 15.00...I get to lose .50 a bottle. And for this I gave up my 6 figure salary and comfy urban life!!!!!
