There are lots of very decent wines to be found in this price range, but I find there are lots of disappointments too. One of my arguments has always been that I am less disappointed by a disappointing $6 bottle than one at twice the price.
Budgets are budgets. Even at $8 a day you spend $3,000 annually on wine. I often go over budget, but that's why I buy a lot of $5-7 wines, to allow me to spend $15-30 on occasion.
I think you can do very well in Spain and Italy at this price range.
