Murphys, CA wine tasting...

...Murphys is in Calaveras County in the Gold Country about 2.5 hours northeast of Oakland.

Ironstone Winery there has a large outdoor amphitheater with summer concerts.

There are nearly 30 wine tasting rooms on the 5 block long Main St. plus a few more on the hiway into town.

The tasting rooms charge between $5 and $10 for a tasting and each one I list below had a good enough bottle of red for me to buy to waive the fee.

Villa Vallecitos
Vina Moda

The best wines varied from grenache, barbera, syrah, mouvedre, zinfandel, rose and cab to a few blends.

The best wines are pretty good but not great and not that expensive. It's a fun area to taste, particularly if you can work in a concert.
