remote gain controls

I used to have an old Kicker ZR amp in the mid 90's that had a remote gain control on it, and I loved it. It was on my sub amp, so, I could dial in the right amount of bass. I'm curious about these "Remote Bass Control" units I've seen on Diamond Audio and Phoenix Gold amps. Are these true remote gain controls or are they remote bass boosters at some specified frequency?
