I'm sure that this book has been discussed quite a bit already on this forum, but I just had to mention it.
The only book in recent memory that even comes close to serving up this type of emotional wallop is Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan Lethem.
There's palpable fear in this story... and hope. There's nothing cheap about it. You earn your way through this book by having the courage to turn the page.
