I think the Minolta Maxxum 5 is far better than the competition. For around $230 in New York (see B&H) it's a steal. Good lenses, too. Used Maxxum lenses are a good bit cheaper than Nikon or Canon. Check out KEH in Atlanta and compare. I'd compare the Maxxum 5 on features to the Canon Elan 7 or Nikon N80 rather than the price competitive N65 or EOS Rebel 2000. If you go to the Minolta web site you can down load the Maxum 5 manual and go through it. It'll give you a real good idea of what it's like. If you go Maxxum, think about a used 35-105 f/3.5-4.5 macro lens. It's an early model, still works on the new bodies, and is very sharp with a good macro range. About $150 for a clean one. There is a lighter, smaller, newer model that's not quite as sharp and lacks the macro range.
