It happened to me, too. On a Sunday in March of 1984, which I remember because my ex-wife and I had tickets to see the Pittsburgh Maulers opener against Birmingham and it was bitter cold. Former Steeler QB Cliff Stoudt was the QB for the opposing teams and the fans pelted him with snowballs.
We got home to a non-functioning furnace.
There was no Home Depot/Lowes/Builder's Square/Hechinger's back then, you needed a thermocouple you had to get it from the local hardware store.
Which closed early on Sunday.
