...Murphys is in Calaveras County in the Gold Country about 2.5 hours northeast of Oakland. Ironstone Winery there has a large outdoor amphitheater with summer concerts. There are nearly 30 wine tasting rooms on the 5 block long Main St. plus a few more on the hiway into town. The tasting rooms charge between $5 and $10 for a tasting and each one I list below had a good enough bottle of red for me to buy to waive the fee. Broll Mountain Hatcher Locke Millaire Newsome-Harlow Renner Tanner Villa Vallecitos Vina Moda The best wines varied from grenache, barbera, syrah, mouvedre, zinfandel, rose and cab to a few blends. The best wines are pretty good but not great and not that expensive. It's a fun area to taste, particularly if you can work in a concert.
