I have a 1984 cuddy cabin 19'with a 488 merc and alpha1 drive. i got the boat from a friend which moved away to college completely restored the interior and started it for a few seconds with starting fluid last fall. my question is can i start it and see how the engine runs out of the water with like a hose hook up and can i engeage the drive to see if it works?or does that have to be in the water i also wanted to cheange the oil in there how much oil goes into an alpha1 gen1.Another thing it does not have the lights what kind of light would i use.i know this might sound silly to most but i am new to this and really would like to try the boat after all winter of interior rstoration.can anyone help a newbie please e-mail me or post a reply i will be really greatfull (keep in mind that i am mechanically inclined just no clue as to boating)the only clue i have is that parts are outrageusly pricey and wanna be safe than sorry

You can run it out of the water on Muffs hooked to your hose, But DO NOT engage the prop unless it is submerged. You can use a 55 gal drum to test your prop, but not the hose thing.Starting fluid is a bad move and should only be used as a last resort if at all. If it wont start, there is a reason, FInd it.
