I have a 16ft boat with a `77 50hp Johnson. I need to replace the entire steering system, including the tilt tube, and am looking for suggestions on the steering system to buy, the tilt tube parts, type, etc... Any input appreciated.

I recommend rack and pinion. That's what I installed 15 years ago and no problems. Just remember to keep it lubed.
