While working on a friends inboard that has been setting up for years I found a few cracks in the block. Is there anything that we can do to repair them? I was told to JB weld them that if the engine runs ok and we don't find water in the oil don't worry about them. I question that advice

Check out engine stitching, about $80 an inch in BC. Makes permanent repair.

I donot know how serious these cracks are. I have had one inline six cylinder motor with a bad crack to the out side water jacket. I took it to a metal shop and had the crack welded. I donot know if jbweld will hold or not.If you have a closed coolant system, One that cools by recirculating coolant through a heat exchanger you will lose coolant through the cracks and run hot.Depending on severity of cracks you might need a new engine block. Just my 2 cents worth, TG.
