Does anyone know if its possible to add an alternator to a 1999 Johnson 8 hp?

I have a 1997 Johnson 5hp and I have bought an alternator for it that I have yet to have fitted. I was told that the firm that took over Johnson (Bombardier?) is making the normal spares and extras. The alternator is reminiscent of motorcycle flywheel fitments and is supposed to give 4 amps.
