I have an old Evinrude 18 hp engine. It runs great and its easy to maintain the parts. But my problem is that I seem to missing a part. It's the latching mechanism that holds the prop out of the water when I don't want it in the water. I need the lever clasp assembly for when I beach the boat - sometimes wave action rocks the lower unit in sand to the point that paint is scraped off the prop. All I want to do is find a way to keep the shaft out of the water. Any ideas?

You can use a block of wood in between the lower part of the motor and the transom of the boat.
