I have a Sevylor inflatable boat that holds up to 700 lbs. It has a place to put a motor mount and the motor rating is 2 hp or less. About how fast would a 2 hp motor go with me in the boat, I weigh 180 lbs. Also, could I put a 4 hp motor on the boat, even though it is only rated for a 2 hp motor? Is the rating just for safety or is it because a motor over 2 hp wouldn't fit? There would never be moret than me and 1 other person in the boat, so I would not be over the weight limit. I would be using this boat on a 1/2 acre pond. Tell me what you think.

Also, how fast would a trolling motor go with just me in the boat?
Bill, a half acre pond? Didn't that Sevylor come with those little collapsable aluminum/plastic oars? ;)A 2 hp motor would be more than enough, I should think. A raft of that sort won't go much over 5 or 6 mph no matter what motor you put on it. It won't plane, and with too much power it will just dig a hole in the water and scare the ducks.
An electric trolling motor would be excellent. The speed would be pretty close to what you would get out of the gas motor, with alot less fuss. I've used one on a soft-bottomed raft before, and it worked very nicely.
