I am unable to get my boat to go in either forward or reverse. The gears just grind, not a good sound. So before I decide to give up , I have recently spent a lot of money on the boat, and sell the boat, I thought should get the opinion of others who may have had this problem. I would be interested in knowing what the problem may be, cost to repair and if this is something that can be repaired by some one other than a boat mechanic. Thanks for your response

OH, it's very true, NOTHING good can come of this shifting system.
Woodpecker is correct.
I've been fighting this for 3+ years and still not right spent alot of $$$$$$$$$$$$ I finally found a mechanic that knows what he's talking about, and he says about $1500.00 to replace all of the micro switches adjust everything perfectly today and next week, could be the SAME OLD THING!!!!!
My Brother and I have been doing some homework and are thinking of trying a 2 lever sytem and doing away with all of the switches.
You may grind the gear box occasionally, but it beats getting towed in evrytime out and having an angry wife and 2 dissapointed kids starring at YOU.....

I had the same problem and it's called the clutch down in the lower unit. I'm not too mechanically inclined, but I had someone simply replace the lower unit with a used one. I think it cost roughly 600.00 to replace.
If you haven't already, check your connection from the shift lever at the console to the shift lever on the motor. If there is to much play in the cable, the lever won't fully engage. If you are really lucky, your problem could be something simple like this...Otherwise, you're screwed.
