here i am going down the water full blast and the damn engine dies; i fart around with it a while and finally get it to run on choke and get me back to shore at a very slow speed.
checked the filters and gas looks clean; can't imagine what happened to the damn motor.
i dont think i had the tank vented at the time; hell it might have vapor locked. anyone got any ideas ........

If your tank was not vented, it was only a matter of time before the motor fails. I do not think it was vapor locked, vapor lock is usualy a condion created wile starting the motor.
put some mufflers on it or throw it in a tank and try to run it again. make sure your tank is vented. I supose its possible your pluggs fouled, that could cause hard running condition. Possible you sucked some crap into your carb also.
there are of course several other reasons your having problem,
