I would like to make a motor for my pirogue using a weed eater..like a "Go Devil". Has anyone done this or know anything about how to build it? The reason for the weed eater is that it is light and the pirogue should not need much to push it. Any help would be great.
Thanks for your time and effort,

I what done it before with a rayn triimer. i was immpressed by the power. I cation the prop i used was about 2 1/2". It was funny sounding to say the least. I suugest finding a surpluse center and make a go devel, i would be cheaper in the longrun.

You may have a problem getting the proper gear reduction. Weedeater drives are generally very high rpm compared to boat propellers. I don't believe you'll be happy with the results from trying to turn a prop that fast with a little-bitty motor.

the high rpm deal isnt that big of a deal, nothng a little gearing wont cure. It certainly wont be fast, But its do able. I was concidering doing the exact same thing awile ago. I still might do it, but I htink I have something else in mind for that weed eater now.
That Idea struck me several years ago. The bent shaft type already has a bend and the shaft could be cut down and a small prop added. The high speed may not be a problem if one used a small enough prop. I buid small boats and some day I will aquire an old one with a slip clutch ( very important)and try to build a small motor. IT is SHOCKING that NO ONE is building a small engine like that for about 100 dollars. They may just get rich. What we boaters need is a very simple cheap little motor like the String trimmers that are selling for around 100 dollars. Someone please tell the Japanese!!! The greedy americans build them for 4 r 5 hundred dollars and the poor can't afford those. I wonder why they quit building the old sears air cooled engines? Greed I would guess. Try to find one like those old cheap but good engines and you will find it made over seas and costing 4 or 5 hundred bucks with NO reverse. Come on someone give us a cheap weed eater type motor that does not need a big heavy battery that runs down before we get back home.

search hard around the internet. Someone makes one of these for duckhunting out of a coffinbox.I think that they use a gas drill though, which is a chainsaw motor wth a gear reduction box on it.
