Agustin Huneeus was giving a speech at UC Davis recently:
"We talk about Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon as our highest quality fine wine. But you can take a Washington state Cabernet grown in a vineyard valued at $3,000 an acre and blind taste it with a Napa Cabernet grown in a vineyard valued at $350,000 an acre and find both to be of high quality. Quality myths are also promoted and perceived based on packaging and closures."
No clue where to find at $3k an acre but his point is made.
Follow Ups:
New as in recently started and new as in finally starting to make quality wine.
Let me give that some thought. I feel sort of out of the loop at the moment.
You could go to Taste Wa in Seattle next weekend....not sure how many wineries are there but many many hundred!
Not my kind of thing but we go every few years to make sure people don't forget. This year my now 21 year old will be representing.
Ummm, to far to drive from Houston.
...James Laube talks about Napa cab prices.
"A single number tells you all you need to know right now about where Napa Valley is headed: $1 million an acre. Land in America's most famous winegrowing district has always been prized. But in the past two decades, prices have risen faster and steeper than anyone can recall."
So it appears that now based on the cost of Napa cab at $8000 per ton,
he says the cost of a Napa cab is $80 per bottle (IIRC).
Lets assume 3 tons to the acre (although I wouldn't be surprised that some people will crop lighter) which brings in $24k a year on a one million investment. And we aren't including management or farming costs.
Thats not a real business. I should have started a venture capital firm first.
...I know in Napa have retired from making a lot of money doing something else.
I've been pretty much priced out of Napa for quality Cabs. Not paying $75 and up. I love the WS back pages, listing 90+ point Cabs all starting over $100. And I guess they're selling it all. Just read where Cameron Hughes has fallen on hard times because there isn't as much excess juice laying around.
I'm still getting good Cabs for the money from Washington, although I've noticed their prices are starting to creep up.
