I have found out a little on the history of this grape. I apologise if you all know it already but it is fairly impressive and all the other good grapes can be teraced back to their origin (European).I am informed that it was originally an Italian grape that was transplanted to Cal and took to the conditions there. The original grape was wiped out by a disease (fungus, bacteria, insect?) and the only remaining vines were those in Cal. This almost makes it an American grape! There must be a god ((Bacchus/Dionysius?) who looks after wine drinkers)!
IMHO this wine is able to compete with the very best at any price and
can be had for $16.00-$22.00 a bottle (or $32+ for the Ridge Wineery bottlings), depending on year. A veritable bargain in this day and age.chugger
(not affilaited with RidgeWinery or Lytton Springs in any way, shape, or form).
Watch for Old vine Zinfandels. These are made from very old vines and are a more concntrated robust grape. Makes for a very complex wine.
Your info is correct. Zinfandel (red) is unique to California and, IMHO, has more character and flavor than anything else produced in America. It's the only American wine I regularly buy and keep in the cellar.
as anyone who sees my purple teeth can attest. much more variability character at my price point than any other domestic red. it's a fun place to be.
G'DayIt is possible that American vines were grafted onto Phyloxera
resistant root stock (e.g. Vitus Robusta) as opposed to Vitus Vinifera,
which is particularly susceptible to this particular louse (literally).
