Welcome to the three tier system. The distributor in your area buys the wine at 50% off of retail (most likely from the winery). They sell the wine to your retail store at 30% off of retail.
So the question is: Where was the discounting coming from? Most likely even a winery like Siduri may be having trouble moving enough $49 bottles that it offered an incentive to the distributor, and the distributor may have done the same to the retailer (especially if it's a big player like BevMo or Total Wine and Spirits.) But I'm just guessing.
A friend of mine received a 95 point score from WS after the wine had been available for months..all of a sudden calls came from not only retail customers (new and old) but out of state wine shops offering to buy all of the remaining stock, and his distributors who had previously not taken the wine because at that price point (under $50 I think, but the cheapest of the three 95 point scores in that particular WS) it was too hard to sell!
