The mistake some people have with their first IPA is they try one with an extremely high IBU(International Bittering Unit)level. Baby steps need to be taken when it comes to IPA's. The bitterness is an aquired taste. Too much too soon and you'll be turned off by the bitterness. A great starter IPA is Red Hook's ESB. Red Hook makes an IPA called Long Hammer that I do not recommend, it's just not very good. Their ESB is not even advertised as an IPA but has all the makings of a great IPA, not too bitter and a really good balance of flavor.
If you want to kick it up a few notches in the bitterness department, try Sierra Nevada's seasonal winter beer called Celebration Ale, one of my favs. If you rally want to go nuts with the bitterness, try Racer5 or a Stone brewings Ruination IPA, just hang on if you go there.
