Cabernets under $30 tasting...

Posted by mkuller on December 3, 2010 at 10:14:41:

...none of these were stellar but a couple were not bad, especially at the price.

7th place 31 pts Columbia Crest 2008 $9.95

6th place 30 pts Cameron Hughes Lot 200 2008 $28

5th place 28 pts Mondavi Oakville 2006 $27.79 (WS 90pts?)

4th place 26 pts Noggle Lake Cty 2005 $20

3rd place 21 pts Mantra Alexander Valley 2007 $16

2nd place 20 pts Kirkland Oakville 2008 $19

1st place 12 pts Liberte Paso Robles 2008 $9.95 (Trader Joes)

We tasted them over a couple of hours while they breathed and changed.

The thing that stands out is the separation in points of the first place wine and the rest, showing a consensus of the 6 tasters.

The Cameron Hughes rating was surprising given the hype.

We also tasted the Chateau St. Michele Columbia Valley 2007 @ $10.99 and it would have come in near the bottom.

Had we included a Poets Row $8.99 from Trader Joes, I think it would have scored near the top.
