While not at all comparable to any other wines, and not something that I would drink everyday, I find dessert wines to be a real treat every now and then. Try some of the various muscat based varieties. I have a special place in my heart for Beaumes-de-Venise muscat, having lived there for some time.

I feel that many of the botrytis cinerea sweetened grapes of Sauternes and Barsac tend to lend a slight acridness and bitterness on the finish, and the Barsac Sauternes are slightly less unctuous and oily than the Sauternes from further south. The Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise seems to lack the bitterness and it always seems to have a taste of the lavender and honey that permeates the Provence air. Maybe it's just the image that I have in my mind's eye of a truly magical place. The problem is that the Beaumes-de-Venise can be hard to find Stateside.

In retrospect, perhaps one should not even compare Sauternes to Muscat, as their geneses are rather different. Just some opinions.
