... if true, shows why California is such a delightfully and incomprehensibly wacky place from anyone else's viewpoint (and twice as much from a quaint European viewpoint), but it also shows an utter lack of respect and appreciation for good wine that will further convince any European that the cause of wine is a lost one in California and that the 'trophy wine' culture is just the antithesis of the wine culture, period.

Then again, if this story is merely a literary construction, then I must commend the author for so brilliantly recreating the reasons why California is such a delightfully and incomprehensibly wacky place from anyone else's viewpoint (and twice as much from a quaint European viewpoint), and particularly for showing the utter lack of respect and appreciation for good wine that will further convince any European that the cause of wine is a lost one in California and that the 'trophy wine' culture is just the antithesis of the wine culture, period.
