Printer/Network Problem

Posted by Visitor on October 28, 2008 at 10:28:34:

I have a Dell running Vista Basic, a cable modem, a G router, a HP printer server and a HP Office Jet Pro K5400 printer. Sometimes, after there have been no changes to the system, the printer goes "offline." Somtimes, after I reinstall the printer, it prints the test page OK, but continues to say it's "offline."

If I delete the printer through the Control Panel, turn off the computer, unplug the modem, unplug the router, wait a minute, plug in the modem, wait for the connect lights to go on, plug in the router, turn on the computer and reinstall the printer, it prints the test page and is in the "ready" status, i.e. not offline, but subsequently goes offline all by itself.

Why does it go offline by itself? Is there an easier way to get it back online than the steps outlined above? If it continually goes offline, is this a problem with the printer itself or is there a problem elsewhere? TIA
