I am really a Mac user, but my wife and I have several Windows only programs. Advice please.

I have been looking for weeks and really don't want to spend as much as a $1000, but I also don't want a machine that will burn my or her legs and last for only 2 hours per charge (I was told this is what to expect with the cheap Intel chip). The best rec so far is a refurbished IBM Notebook. My wife's needs will probably need some graphics capability.
