For every rule there is an exception. I'm not an Aussie fan at all...I won't go near McLaren Vale. But was on a panel with a syrah producer form a cooler part of Australia who made really nice wines.
I very rarely buy Napa unless I've tasted the wine. Too many big over the top over oaked wines trying to justify the high asking price. I know there are exceptions, but unless I'm tasting first, I am not buying.
Pinot is just hard to make no matter where its from.....there are lots of over priced bad wines, especially in Or. But when you find one...wow. I much prefer Or to Ca for Pinot....but its harder to make a good one in Or....the climate can be borderline.
I hate to make blanket statements...I always eat my words eventually
