Annual zinfandel dinner...

Posted by mkuller on March 17, 2017 at 14:51:54:

...there were 6 zinfandels to go with the braised pork rib in tomato sauce with polenta - here is how I rated them (and the other 3 with me agreed).

6. 2104 Gamba Star Road Ranch Russian River Valley - $45 - usually Gamba is my favorite at this dinner but this year the wine they brought was so big and sweet it reminded me more of a port.

5. 2014 Carlisle DuPratt Mendocino Ridge - $47 - they make some excellent zins but this one was just ok - nothing special.

4. 2014 San Lorenzo Rock Garden Alexander Valley - $50 - after Seghesio was sold, Peter Seghesio waited his 5 years and started this winery on an old family vineyard. It was lighter than others, good but pricey.

3. 2015 Mauritseon Family Rockpile Ridge - $44 - very good with a little more minerality.

2. 2013 Hartford Highwire Russian River Valley - $60 - Very nice and balanced, but expensive.

1. 2014 Ridge Lytton Springs Dry Creek Valley - $40 ($29 at Total Wine) - this surprised us since our wine tasting group visited Ridge last October and were not impressed with this wine. But now it was the best and most balanced of the group. Highly recommended.
